On the death anniversary of freedom fighter Shaheed Udham Singh, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal, along with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, visited his hometown Sunam to pay tribute. During their visit, the leaders inaugurated several development projects and addressed the public. Kejriwal said that the condition of Punjab is now improving under the AAP government. He said that their government is working to end drug addiction in the state and bring a revolution in education. Government schools are getting better, and children from poor families are now becoming doctors and engineers. Kejriwal also shared that the biggest drug trafficker has been sent to jail, showing that the government is not afraid to take action. He announced that by September, work will begin to build 20,000 kilometers of roads to connect villages. He added that Punjab now has an honest government that is using every rupee wisely to fulfill the dreams of the martyrs.
At the event in Sunam, Kejriwal said martyr Udham Singh avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and set an immortal example in India’s freedom struggle. His sacrifice inspires standing firm against injustice. He underscored that sacrificing one’s youth and life is not easy. Martyrs like Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Sukhdev, Subhas Chandra Bose, and Chandrashekhar Azad envisioned a free India where the poor receive rights and justice. He argued that earlier governments had ruined Punjab through drugs, corruption, and misgovernance, while AAP is rebuilding the state sincerely.
Kejriwal said under AAP, drug abuse is dropping, and affected families are regaining hope. One-time drug lords have been arrested. Electricity, previously available only at 3 AM, now runs eight hours during the day—an unprecedented feat in India. Poor students now aspire to become professionals, and canal water reaches remote farms after decades. Unlike past governments that complained about lack of funds, AAP never gives excuses. The same budget, officers, and systems remain, but now an honest government saves taxpayer money and drives development. AAP is determined to fulfill martyrs’ dreams, not just make promises.
CM Bhagwant Mann said honoring martyrs by naming institutions after them is vital. He spoke about Udham Singh’s bold act in London and condemned earlier rulers for enabling drug proliferation and corruption. He and Kejriwal unveiled development works worth ₹85 crore in Sunam: upgrades to the tehsil office, a new bus stand with shopping complex, a girls’ senior school, an indoor sports facility, and expansion at Sh. Udham Singh Government College. They also honored Udham Singh’s descendants.
